“Motivational Stuff Doesn’t Work!” – Yes It Does!
Here is part of an email I recieved last week.
——————— QUOTE FROM EMAIL ——————–
“… but motivational products just don’t work for me. I watched a video and even went to a seminar once and neither one worked. The next month I didn’t feel motivated to…”
——————— QUOTE FROM EMAIL ——————–
Jim’s email is not unique. I have heard similar statements like this before.
Here is my reply to Jim.
Dear Jim,
I have the same problem with showers and exercise. Using your logic, neither one of them work either.
If I take a shower and by next month I am dirty all over again, does that mean that showers do not work? If you went for a 5 mile walk last year and this year your doctor tells you that you are not fit, does it mean that exercise does not work?
You see, motivational materials do work. They do exactly what you want them to do. They motivate you. Yes, they wear off. It is not something that you can do once and expect a lasting effect. Just like exercise and bathing, you must repeat the use of it in order to maintain the results.
How often? Use motivational material as often as needed to remain constantly motivated. For most people once a week is not enough. How would you feel if you only bathed once a week? Most people will need motivation about as often as they need bathing.
You never know where you may find inspiration. Today I found it in this little poem.
Listen to the mustn’ts, child.
Listen to the don’ts.
Listen to the shouldn’ts, the impossibles, the won’ts.
Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me…
Anything can happen, child.
Anything can be.
Shel Silverstein
I am thankful that the universe delivered that to me at just the right moment.
Peace be with you,
John Derrick
Great job. You bust me up. I was laughing so hard I fell out of my chair.
Yeah, life is about wax on wax off as per the movie Karate Kid for now.
I loved your shower analogy, I have it with dusting.
Now that is another thing that never seems to last….
Thanks Preston.
Wilma… Ha ha ha… yeah, dusting. That is a good one! Dusting and pet hair also. I have a dog that sheds so much I often am amazed that she is not bald.
Hey John,
Great post! I love the examples you use, plus I thought they were funny. I’ve been practicing and researching for many years now and have enjoyed every moment of it.
It actually takes turning off the TV, A LOT…and getting in that quiet place which was very difficult for me intially, because I had really loud mind chatter ๐ But with some practice, I watched as my life changed from doing what everyone thought I should be doing, into being who I really am.
So, I say to that person just take some time daily to be with yourself and practice what you learn and in time it will just feel natural to be joyous.
Thanks for the fun John!
Ruth
Hello Ruth
Thank you for the kind words. It is nice to meet you.
That is very well said. I think we can all do with a lot less TV.
I tell my children that when they are watching TV they are watching other people pretend to be living a life. Instead, I want them to be living a life. It’s too easy to sit idle as life passes you by.
My eight year old actually meditates on his own. He blows me away with some of the things he knows.
Hope to see you again,
John Derrick
I always find motivation work very well for me. Thanks for dropping by my law blog.
